On 10 December, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas met with Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Migrant Crisis.
The meeting discussed Lithuania’s membership of the UNICEF Executive Board, the challenges ahead, possible initiatives, and the key challenge that Lithuania would face at the end of its term in 2021, namely the adoption of the new UNICEF Strategic Plan 2022-2025.
According to A. Khan, in the near future, UNICEF plans to focus more on child online safety, environmental issues and climate change, as well as children’s mental health.
N. Germanas informed the UNICEF Regional Director about the Foreign Ministry’s plans to allocate a voluntary contribution of EUR 15, 000 for UNICEF activities in Ukraine.
A. Khan said that the situation in eastern Ukraine was very difficult. Many children are exposed to traumatic events; especially many of them are affected by psychological trauma. It is, therefore, necessary to ensure social and psychological support for children who live in the area affected by armed conflict.
A. Khan came to Lithuania to participate in the National Forum on Human Rights in Vilnius.
