    L. Linkevičius: Russia’s aggression against Ukraine remains major security challenge in OSCE region

On 5 December at the OSCE Ministerial Council in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius highlighted that Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine and other neighboring countries remained a major security challenge within the OSCE region.

As regards the military conflict in eastern Ukraine, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister voiced his support for Ukraine’s efforts to resolve the conflict by peaceful means. L. Linkevičius stressed the need to fully implement the Minsk agreements and drew attention to Russia's continued actions in Russian-occupied territories of Georgia, especially tensions caused by the recent intensification of Russia's creeping annexation of Georgia.

“We shall not build a better future, if we weaken our commitments or apply the existing rules to the changed situation,” said the Foreign Minister.

On the margins of the OSCE Ministerial Council, L. Linkevičius also met with Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs David Zalkaliani and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia Nikola Dimitrov, and discussed the way forward to enhance bilateral cooperation.

At the Council meeting, L. Linkevičius briefed his counterparts on the civil society initiative supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania to revive the International Sakharov Hearings. An integral part of the project "Reviving the Helsinki Spirit" for the period 2020-2025, the hearings focus on analyzing and addressing the new challenges facing Europe and the world.

The Ministerial Council is the central decision-making and governing body of the OSCE. The meeting provides the Ministers of the 57 OSCE participating states an opportunity to review and assess the organization’s activities and strengthen the dialogue on security issues in the OSCE area.
